Exporting Favorites To HTML

How To Make A HTML Page From Your Bookmarks

Once you start bookmarking pages and find your favorites list growing out of control, you may want to look at creating a html page that will display all your bookmarks. It’s easy enough to do and you can even set the html page as your homepage in your browser.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Choose File
  • Choose Import and Export
  • You will be presented with the Import/Export Wizard, click ‘Next’
  • Select ‘Export Favorites’
  • Select ‘Export To A File Or Address’
  • Enter your location to save the file to by using the browse button (such as desktop)
  • Select ‘Next’
  • Select ‘Finish’

On your desktop you should notice a .htm file named: “bookmark.htm”

Double click that to open in your browser
(or go ‘file’, ‘open’, locate file, ‘open’, in your browser to open the file)

You will see a page listing clickable links of all your bookmarks. This page is very basic, very easy html. You can easily edit this page to make it more customizable (color, graphics, whatever you want!) by using a html editor if you know basic html code.

Making Bookmark.htm Your Home Page

If you’d like to make your new bookmark page your browser’s home page, here’s how you do that:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Select Tools
  • Select Internet Options

The top box is where you would enter the location of your bookmark.htm file. For example if you placed your bookmark.htm file in your ‘My Documents’ folder, the location would be:

C:\My Documents\bookmark.htm

  • Once you’ve entered the location, Click Apply
  • Click OK

Now click the ‘Home’ button on your browser, it should load your new bookmarks page.

Notes: If you move the bookmark file to another location, you will have to put that new location in Internet Options otherwise your browser will not be able to locate the file.

You may also upload this page to your personal web space (if you have one) and you will be able to access your bookmarks online, even when you’re not at your own computer!
