How To Backup Up Browser Favorites

How To Backup Internet Explorer Favorites

It’s a good idea to backup your browser favorites every once in awhile - just in case your computer crashes or if a time comes that you must reformat. You can also do this to copy your favorites from one computer to another or upload your favorites to your website to have online access to your favorites.

Saving A Copy Of Your Favorites

  • Open your browser window (Internet Explorer)
  • At the top of the browser you’ll see File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help
  • Click ‘File’
  • Then choose ‘Import and Export’

You will then be presented with the Import/Export Wizard (shown here):

IE Import/Export Wizard

  • Choose ‘Next’
  • Choose ‘Export Favorites’
  • Ensure the ‘Favorites’ Folder is highlighted
  • Click ‘Next’
  • Choose ‘Export to a File or Address’
  • Choose ‘Browse’
  • Select location on your computer to save your bookmarks to
  • Choose ‘Next’
  • Click ‘Finish’

To ensure your bookmarks saved properly, go to the location on your computer where you chose to export your bookmark file (it will be a .htm file), and open the page by double clicking it. You may also choose to save a copy of your bookmark file to a floppy disk, upload it to a website to give you online access to your bookmarks, or keep a backup folder somewhere on your computer (recommended) to save backups of various programs (also keep a copy on disk).
