Online Safety Tips

Security Online

Firewalls

Firewalls are a very important safety feature for online users. It’s easy for anyone to gain access to your computer if you don’t have one installed. Your bank PINs and passwords could be tracked, your surfing habits logged or other privacy issues breached.

Here are three free firewalls you can try, just pick your favorite:
ZoneAlarm
Kerio
Outpost
Anti-Virus

Another must have item is a good anti-virus program. Without protection from viruses, your computer is vulnerable to all sorts of viruses that could cripple your computer or breach your privacy. Here are two free antivirus programs to try, pick your favorite & remember to keep it updated.
AVG
AntiVir
Online Virus Scans (Free)

It’s a good idea to run an online scan on your computer every once in awhile, just in case your antivirus has been corrupted.

Here are three places to try:
PandaSoftware
Housecall
Symantec

Spyware Remover

Please make sure your computer is kept clean of spyware/adware, you won’t regret it. Run these at least once a week.

Use both of these free tools, they compliment each other
(make sure to keep them updated)

SpyBot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware

Email Attachments

Because so many viruses come in the form of an email attachment, I have created a message rule in my email client (ie. Outlook Express, Pegasus, etc.) that automatically sends any emails with attachments to the delete folder. There really is no need for attachments, everything can be cut & paste, pictures can be uploaded to websites to share with everyone, etc. There is no need for anyone (on a personal basis) to be sending you attachments. I highly suggest you try this, it really makes a big difference in protecting your computer.
! Maintenance !

Disk Defragmenter:
Once every week or so you should run the Disk Defragmenter (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter) to keep your computer running smoothly. Because nothing else should be running in the background while you’re defragmenting, you should run this while in ‘Safe’ mode. If you’re not sure how to do that, here’s a link that will walk you through it:

Safe Mode Help

Or if you’d rather just shut everything down yourself, this is a handy free tool that checks EVERYTHING running in the background and you can click which ones to close:

EndItAll2

Scan Disk
This you should do every once in awhile as well, in fact Disk Defragmenter won’t run sometimes unless you’ve done Scan Disk. (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scan Disk).

What to Buy Online

Shopping online is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Pretty much anything can be bought online including men’s, ladies and children’s clothing, accessories, cosmetics, baby items, books, electronics, you name it. As long as the price is right and you feel comfortable dealing with a merchant (and there is a satisfactory refund policy in place), shopping online can be not only a time saver, but a money saver!

Not Satisfied With A Purchase?

Simply follow the refund policy instructions that the merchant has provided. Your credit card or other payment method (such as PayPal) should be promptly refunded. However if you’ve contacted the merchant, followed the refund policy and the merchant refuses to refund, contact your credit card for instructions on how to stop or remove the credit charge. There should be a toll free number listed on your credit card statement that you can use. PayPal also has buyer protection policies in place that you should get familiar with.

How To Download Files

Help Downloading Software

Downloading is the process of copying a file from a web server or computer to your computer. The file can be a piece of software, a music file (.mp3), a document, etc. You are simply copying one file to your computer for your use.

Downloading Files

When you go to the location of the file you want to download (usually given on a website or in an email, etc.), you are presented with an alert box similar to:

Download Box Example

The filename tells you the file you are downloading, the file type tells you what type of file it is you are downloading (.exe is an application or software),

From: tells you the website you are downloading from, and you are asked if you want to open the file or save the file or cancel the file download.

If you change your mind and do not wish to download the file, just click the cancel button. If you decide to download the file, it is recommended you save the file to your desktop so you can scan it for viruses before installing the application.

Click ‘Save’ and then you are asked where on your computer you would like to download the file to. Save it to your desktop (just click the desktop icon on the left side of the box),

Save Box Example

Once the file has completed downloading, you will get this notice box:

Complete Box Example

Now that the file has completed its download, run a virus scan on the file. Depending on which anti-virus program you have running, you should be able to right click on the file and click ‘Scan With AVG’ or whichever anti-virus program you have. If you don’t have that option, first go through your anti-virus software FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page to find out how you can scan a single file.

Once you have scanned the file and no viruses are found (if there are trojans or viruses found, DO NOT install or open the file – simply delete the file to your trash bin), install or run the file by double clicking it and just follow the directions.
